Year 10 students take part in the STEMUnity Design Challenge workshop, working in teams to solve real-world engineering design briefs using the iterative design process. They develop skills in creativity, collaboration and presentation.
All GCSE D&T students also benefit from industry visits and guest speakers, including engineers and designers who share their career journeys and guide students through live design briefs.
This year lays the groundwork for developing practical skills and a deeper understanding of the industry expectations ahead of their final coursework.
As part of an Enterprise Challenge, Year 10 D&T students are tasked with designing and creating products using recycled plastic bottle tops. These items are then sold during Global Entrepreneurship Week, with teams competing to make the highest profit. The winning team earns the right to choose which charity will receive the total funds raised.
Each year, Year 10 D&T GCSE students visit Longlands at Holkham Park to explore sustainability and skilled careers in forestry, carpentry, blacksmithing, and stone carving.
The visit includes a talk from the forestry team on sustainable woodland management and biomass fuel production, a tour of the carpentry workshop showcasing timber processing, and time at the Holkham Forge, where students see blacksmiths and a stone carver in action.
This enriching experience connects STEM learning to real-world industries, highlighting the role of sustainability, craftsmanship, and heritage skills in modern careers.
Year 10 students enjoyed a fantastic session led by the Wells Men’s Shedders as part of their timbers unit. Thank you to Mark Howes and his team of volunteers for demonstrating woodturning techniques and showcasing his handmade lathe.
Year 10 students also explored various textile construction techniques, including weaving, knitting and wet felting. Special thanks again to Mark Howes for his spinning wheel demonstration.
