The S-RC Cup is a national engineering competition where students design, build, programme and race high-performance remote-controlled cars. Teams don't just race—they develop branding, engineering portfolios, presentations and race strategy, making it a brilliant mix of engineering and enterprise.
In our very first season, both APHS teams qualified for the National Finals, proving that determination and teamwork can compete with schools from across the country.
The Apex Accelerators chose to recycle an existing vac-formed plastic body, which proved to be incredibly lightweight and gave them a slight performance advantage on the track.

The Roarsome Racers chose a cardboard bodyshell after testing a range of different materials. It provided a quick and easy solution and proved surprisingly robust when racing, standing up well to the inevitable bumps with other cars and the track barriers!

One of our proudest S-RC achievements wasn't just on the track. Roarsome Racers and Apex Accelerators were jointly awarded the Best Team Identity Award at the National Final, recognising the creativity and consistent branding shown across both teams' logos, personalised team T-shirts and our team portfolio, which showcased our journey throughout the competition.
This competition provided an invaluable learning experience, and the innovation doesn't stop here. Next academic year, our Year 7 STEM Club students, who supported our Year 8 and 9 teams at the National Final, will be old enough to compete themselves, allowing our programme to expand by up to two more cars.
The teams are already planning their next designs, including developing lighter, stronger bodywork using recycled structural foam kindly donated by EMKAY Plastics. After Mia (Year 8) contacted the company directly to ask for advice, EMKAY offered free offcuts of their IG-F structural foam—a lightweight material used in industries including Formula 1—along with an invitation to visit their facility and learn more about advanced materials and manufacturing.
It's another fantastic example of our students showing initiative, building industry connections and turning ambitious ideas into real engineering opportunities.
